An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on new investigations.
Investigational Treatment Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with numerous of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns
However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Several professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers try to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or prison.
Platform Reaction and Content Elimination
Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative content and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the service safe and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Trading Activities
Research also discovered groups with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with photos of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at home.
Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor posted contact information, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Inside these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful content on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Warnings
“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially serious health risks”.
