American Attack on Caracas Fuels Concerns of Future Danish Territory Annexation.

The recent US-led bombardment in Venezuela and the detention of its president have renewed apprehension regarding America's ambitions on the Arctic territory. Followers of the former president's political movement have allegedly turned their attention to the strategically important landmass following the operations in South America.

Provocative Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely hours following the start of the Caracas operation, a prominent conservative podcaster, who is married to a high-ranking presidential aide, posted a suggestive image. The graphic showed Greenland covered in the American flag, accompanied by cryptic message: "SOON."

This overt threat to claim the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered immediate and firm condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"We are strong partners and should continue to work together as such. American security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally highlighted that Denmark had significantly increased its defence spending this year, allocating a large amount expressly for Arctic and regional security. "And yes, we demand complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he emphasized.

Political Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The tensions were further complicated by the previous naming of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had publicly expressed gratitude to the president, stating it was an "privilege" to work in a unpaid capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the military action in Venezuela, this envoy commended the administration's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the American leader has consistently unnerved European allies with his stated interest in Greenland. The island is viewed as critically important for national security and future mineral exploitation. It currently hosts the most northerly US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a notable television interview, the leader refused to exclude the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes during intensifying global rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of threats, Danish security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of both Greenland issued a joint and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a complex picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's inhabitants desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously scant appetite to become part of the United States. The island has had the legal right to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some analysts are increasingly re-evaluating the likelihood of such a move. One policy analyst focusing in defence admitted she had once dismissed the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a few hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
